THE HOUSTON SPEEDWAY

When Houstonians felt the need for speed they headed out to the Houston Speedway. It was located just west of Main Street and south of Bellaire boulevard. In later years it was also known as the Bellaire speedway. It was not uncommon to pit an airplane against a race car in the late 1920's. In 1930 it was the perfect launch location for a balloon race and in 1937 it was the venue for the first midget auto race held in Texas. That event drew over 9000 spectators. The slide show below represents three decades of events at the race track.
