EARLY TEXAS OIL

In 1866 at “Oil Springs” near Nacogdoches the first oil well in Texas was made. It was not a significant find only producing around ten barrels of oil a day. It did however set into motion events that would transform the state of Texas into a major player in the world’s oil economy. On January 10 in 1901 Spindletop would blow in producing an initial flow of 100,000 barrels of oil a day.  The Petrolia Oilfield in 1907 produced the first gas well located over one of the largest natural gas reserves in the state. The huge East Texas Oilfield exploited in 1930 contains one of the largest oil reservoirs in the United States and has produced over 5 billion barrels of oil. These were the days of fishtail bits and cable rigs. Steel would replace the wooden derricks that dotted the Texas landscape and the rotary rock bit would allow for deeper drilling. Oil fields with names like “Humble”, “Corsicana”, “Pierce Junction” and “Barbers Hill” kept the dream of becoming a true Texas Oilman alive.

The photography exhibited in this calendar showcases the early days of Texas oil.
